A tutorial about how to use the citation database Web of Science to view the links between articles. In this example, we look up a recent article's reference list in order to see which older articles it cited, allowing us to go back in time.

Perform a title search by selecting "title" from the dropdown menu.

Type in the exact title of the newer article from your assignment in quotation marks, or enter keywords from the title.

Access the full-text version of the article by clicking the "Find it at Concordia" button

Click on the title of the article to view citation and reference information.

Click cited reference link in Citation Network box to find out which older articles were cited by the newer article from your assignment.

Check the reference list of the newer article from your assignment to see if it cited the older article.

To link back to the older article, try to find an article in the reference list dealing with the same subject. To check the topic of the articles, view their abstracts.

Once you've found an article in the reference list on the same subject as the older article, click on its title.

Check that article's reference list by clicking on the "cited references" link in the Citation Network box.

Check whether the article cites the older article from your assignment.

Repeat the process (clicking on the titles of articles on the same subject as the older article, then checking their reference lists by clicking the "cited references" link) until you have linked back to the older article. This may require trial and error, and you may encounter dead ends and have to retrace your steps and try a new article.
