Perform a cited reference search, which will allow you to find out which newer articles have cited an older, classic article.

To be able to perform a cited reference search, ensure that you are searching the Web of Science Core Collection. You can select it from the drop-down database menu at the top of the page.

Select "cited reference search" from the drop-down menu above the search box.

Fill in the author, journal title and year of the older article from the assignment. Make sure that the information is structured in the same way as the examples in the search boxes.

Type in the author's name in the following way: last name and first initial of first name and asterisk (*), for example Eldridge J*. You can also select the name from the author index, located below and to the right of the search box.

Input the abbreviated form of the journal title. This information can be found in the journal abbreviation list, located below the search box.

Click on the "search" button.

Check off the box next to the row with information representing the older article from your assignment, and then click "finish search."

Review the list of citing articles to find out if the newer article from the assignment is present. You may have to review multiple pages of results.
0:02:35
If the newer article is not one of the citing articles, then you will have to locate a linking article. To do so, try to find an article on the same topic as the newer article.
0:02:39
To determine the topic of a citing article, you can read a summary of its contents by clicking "view abstract."
0:02:49
To find out if an article on a relevant subject has cited the newer article, click on the number next to "times cited."
0:02:58
Repeat the process (clicking the number next to times cited, scanning citing articles to see if newer article is present) until you have linked forward to the newer article. This may require trial and error. You may encounter dead ends and have to retrace your steps and try a new article.
