Hi, welcome to McFarlin Library.
00:02 |
Today I'm going to show you our website and how to navigate the different features that you may see.
00:09 |
First, the library web address or URL is libraries.utulsa.edu.
00:17 |
To find out more about our library, click on about it will give you general information as well as information about our departments.
00:28 |
The history and hours are very notable as well as the staff directory and student employment opportunities for departments.
00:37 |
Simply click on the link and it will take you directly to that department for more information.
00:43 |
Our Resources & Services tab will give you a lot of information, as well as research tips.
00:51 |
We have guided and self guided help links for library materials including our database list, our catalog, our journals list, our course reserves, and a link to the Mabee Legal Information Center Law library. Depending on your situation here at the University, you can choose faculty, graduate student and a variety of others to get specific information for your situation.
01:22 |
And if you're looking for library spaces, we do have a variety of things to offer including the Faculty Resource Center, the Henneke Center for faculty, and you can reserve a library classroom.
01:34 |
There are a variety of study spaces to work with either in a group or single, and we offer a Writing Center that is staffed through the English Department.
01:45 |
Click on that link.
01:46 |
You will need to create an account to use the writing center.
01:50 |
Once you log on, you will be able to book an appointment.
01:54 |
I highly recommend that you plan ahead at least by 24 hours because they are staffed by graduate students who need some advanced planning to be able to meet with students and faculty.
02:05 |
Here is the information.
02:07 |
It is updated each semester.
02:11 |
If I go back to the homepage of the library, I have my databases tab which will lead you to our A to Z Database list.
02:18 |
Notice we do have 552 databases available.
02:22 |
That number does fluctuate occasionally as we do link to databases that we subscribe to as well as databases through the Tulsa City County Library.
02:33 |
As you will see right here, we have 39 of those databases and we also have several open access databases.
02:40 |
So you do see a variety of resources listed here.
02:44 |
You can also search by specific name if that is easier for you.
02:48 |
And we also have featured databases to show you some of our most popular the newest database that we have right now is HathiTrust.
03:00 |
If I click on the "H", it takes me to that list and there is the database listed and it does call it new for that.
03:06 |
It does open us up to more than 18 million resources through the humanities and arts and sciences, so it is a great resource to check out if you haven't heard about that yet. Here's our link to Special Collections and it will take you to their website variety of information including contact links.
03:28 |
To get back to the McFarlin Library site, click the McFarlin Library link.
03:33 |
Here we have our WorldCat Discovery.
03:36 |
This is how you're going to search the library for articles and books as well as other materials.
03:42 |
If you have a DOI or digital object identifier, this is going to let you find certain articles that have that identifier.
03:51 |
You only need the 10 and everything to the right of the 10 to search for a DOI.
03:56 |
You do not need the whole hyperlink, and if you want to navigate to the Mabee Legal Information Center or the Law Library then click this link and that will take you to that option.
04:07 |
We have our hours and a rotating banner to show different features throughout the library.
04:12 |
If you would like one-on-one research help you click on this link.
04:17 |
It will bring up a form for you to fill out.
04:19 |
Let us know the nature of the request and what your classification is at the university.
04:26 |
That gives us an idea of the angle that you may need help with.
04:32 |
Once you submit that, we will reach out to you and schedule that meeting and we can do online or in person meetings.
04:39 |
They usually last 30 to 60 minutes depending on the nature of whatever you need and we are very flexible and do what we can to help with your research process.
04:50 |
There are Quick Tip Videos which will help guide you through our library resources.
04:56 |
Our FAQs & Policies is another great area you can scan through or you can search a topic here.
05:03 |
If you don't see the answer to your question, you can email us directly or give us a call.
05:10 |
There's also a link for Special Collections and the Law Library or you can come here and ask the question.
05:16 |
Please make sure you direct it to one of the four areas which would be the Law Library, McFarlin Library Reference Desk which would be for any research questions that you may have, McFarlin Library for Special Collections, and McFarlin for Circulation for books circulation processes if you have a book that's overdue, if you have any questions about the material you may have checked out, that's going to be the correct option for that.
05:43 |
However, we also offer another feature that you'll see here in the top right hand corner that says Chat with Us. If it is green, you click on the button, it will give you a box.
05:53 |
You can fill in your name or leave that blank if you choose and then ask your question.
05:57 |
A librarian will then join in the conversation and help you get the answers that you need.
06:03 |
If this button is red, if you click on that, it will take you to our chatbot who will lead you through and help you find the answers to your questions.
06:12 |
If again, there is nothing there to help with what you're looking for, simply fill out that question form that I just showed you on the right hand side and we will respond within 24 hours.
06:23 |
If you're a professor and you would like to invite a librarian into your class to help with advanced research and information literacy skills, we are very happy to do that and just click that link.
06:34 |
It'll give you more information about our program and if you have questions about Interlibrary Loan again, please don't ever pay for an article online.
06:43 |
Please come to us so that we can try to get that for you.
06:47 |
If you have any further questions, please let us know.
06:50 |
There's an ask us button at the top and we'll be happy to talk with you.
06:54 |
Hope you have a great day. Bye.

00:00 |
Hi, my name is Lisa and today I'm going to show you our new search platform on the McFarlin Library website.
00:06 |
It's called Discovery.
00:09 |
Here in the middle you'll see a search bar.
00:10 |
It says search the TU Libraries.
00:13 |
You can search by everything, books, articles or media.
00:17 |
The default is for Everything.
00:19 |
There is an advanced search feature.
00:21 |
If I click on that, it's going to give me some more flexibility to use my boolean operators and search indexed terms or attributes for articles and other materials that you may find in the library catalog.
00:35 |
And then if you need to expand those search terms, you can use And, Or, Not and will be a limiter and things that return will have to be from every box that is filled out or it's going to be an either or situation.
00:50 |
So that will be your expander and not will be a limiter and that will actually exclude certain things from a field.
00:59 |
If I go back to the homepage if you want to search the Mabee Legal Information Center or the MLIC library, you will need to click this link to navigate to their page.
01:11 |
They use the platform named Alma and so their search feature will be slightly different than what you see on our page here at McFarlin.
01:20 |
If I want to search our James Joyce collection, I type in the name of the author I'm looking for.
01:30 |
It's going to tell me we have about 24,000 results.
01:36 |
It does say that they have expanded the search to include related terms or I can default back to the original search that I asked for.
01:47 |
Off to the left here you'll see refining options.
01:50 |
I can limit to types of books or peer reviewed.
01:54 |
If I'm looking for an article right now I'm searching in all of the University of Tulsa libraries except for the maybe legal information center, or I can choose to look for one specifically, whether that be the University School or HCAR at the Gilcrease Museum, Special Collections, or the McFarlin Library.
02:15 |
If I select one of these libraries, it will automatically remove the option for the peer-reviewed articles because they are subscription based and not technically housed or owned by McFarlin.
02:29 |
If I want to look for articles instead, I can remove that check mark and you notice the peer reviewed option does come back.
02:37 |
If I go down to format, I see a variety of format options that I can choose from.
02:43 |
You may also search by date range and a variety of other resources here.
02:49 |
One of the amazing things about Discovery is that it is part of a single sign on for the University of Tulsa now.
02:58 |
So if I go back to the homepage and look in the top right hand corner.
03:01 |
It does say my library account.
03:04 |
Once I click on that, especially if I'm already logged into another platform, it will log me in automatically.
03:10 |
If not, it will prompt you to log in using your single sign on in here you can search the Discovery platform.
03:16 |
You can look for course reserves or click on the link for different resources, which is our A to Z Database list, our research guides to help you with certain subject matter in certain courses and request research appointment with the librarian when, whether in person or virtually if I go back to my search and again I'm going to type in James Joyce, my list of results are back.
03:47 |
If I see a variety of things that I would like to come back to later, I can click the save button here and it will actually add to my saved items.
03:57 |
And so now that goes to one and I can tick that as many times as I need to so that when I come back later I don't have to reselect all of the things that I found interesting the first time around.
04:08 |
I can go to my saved items list and now I have it in complete list that I was looking through earlier.
04:15 |
You will also see a variety of other options here in Discovery.
04:23 |
You will be able to do a one click link to interlibrary loan.
04:28 |
If a book is on hold and you recall it, you'll have that ability to do so as well right out of this platform if you can.
04:36 |
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to a librarian and ask us for help.
04:42 |
Or you can go to the ask us link here at the top of the page and you'll see a variety of ways to get a hold of us.
04:47 |
Thanks for watching and I hope you have a great day.
