Hey everyone this is Professor Carrie Goulding and this is a somewhat longer video that basically walk you through the entire course and givse you an introduction to the course.

I'm super excited to teach you guys and I'm really excited about teaching writing 2. This particular course is one of my favorite courses to teach.

So you'll see here I've got us on the course home page so you'll notice on the course homepage there's a copy of the painting The School of Athens by Raphael.

So why do we have a picture of the School of Athens on the front page of our course?

Well first of all Western Democratic Society, especially our ideas about argument debate, Using rhetoric to solve problems and learn, is all based on the culture of the ancient Greeks, which is one of the first democracies in the world.

And this course is really about how to find information, recognize factual information, And make arguments using that information so it's really based on What the ancient Greeks

said citizens needed to support their democracy.

You also see that there are mathematicians, scientists philosophers, and artists conversing and showing each other their wor,k and this is the type of culture that I hope we can develop in this class, where we will be sort of like a writing Workshop, we will be writing, creating, and sharing ideas.

And hopefully in a comfortable and supportive environment.

Okay so that's the School of Athens. Then lower down on our front page you'll see my contact information and I put my contact information there on the front page because I really want you guys to reach out to me to ask me questions, to email me.

Definitely stop by my office hours I'm going to be on campus in A231.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays and then on Wednesdays I have zoom office hours.

If those times don't work for you we can always make an appointment and I can zoom with you at a different time so just email me and we can set up a different time to answer your questions.

All right so pretty much you're home in the course is going to be in modules.

The modules are set up week by week so that you'll very clearly have a to-do list for the week.

You'll know what and when to complete assignments.

So you'll notice with Week 1, if you click on the overview you'll get it both a goal for the week and a to-do list and pretty much all The assignments are going to be due on Thursdays and Sundays.

But some of the assignments, especially the discussion boards, you want to get started on earlier so if you have the discussion boards complete on Thursday for example.

As soon as possible, make your initial post on the discussion board and then also respond to two other students by the due date.

Okay.

So that's the overview.

And then the assignments will be listed below. Anything with a date on it, that's an assignment, so you want to read through an assignment at least 2 or 3 days or even a week before the due date just so you can get started on the assignment beforehand because a lot of these assignments take a couple hours to complete, if not more time.

I think I mentioned this in the syllabus, and we will look at that and in a little bit.

Overall you should plan on spending about 12 hours a week on this cours,e so if this were an on-campus course, we would have 4 hours on campus and then you'd have about 6 hours of homework.

8 hours of homework, actuall, if I can do my math correctly.

So since this is asynchronous online you should have about 12 hours of work total.

Some of that is going to be interacting with other students in the course and some of that will be doing work on your own.

Okay so your first assignment this week is to complete the introductions discussion post. You're going to complete an initial post that's about you and then to complete the assignment you need to respond to two other students' post and if you want to respond to more you can: that's just a minimum to get credit for the assignment.

I've also posted a video where I've introduced you to the course texts. We have think again and they say I say we're working on this week, in addition to the framework for success in postsecondary writing. We're just doing a little bit of reading in the text this week to get started.

The next assignment you have this week is to create a writing portfolio that just means you're going to create a Google folder and some organization like some folders within that folder to start thinking about how to organize pieces of your writing and your prewriting even your reading assignments, to show how you progressed throughout the semester. So there's a lot of information underneath this assignment.

Make sure to read through it a couple times carefully and then you should be set to complete the assignment. You can also always reach out to me with any questions.

Okay, finally your last assignment this week is to complete a reading Journal. This is asking you to do some interaction with the text. I'm sure that you're already annotating the text and taking notes: highlighting, underlining, and writing notes in the margin or writing notes on a separate piece of paper or document.

This reading journal is asking you to do an additional assignment where you identify quotes from the reading and respond to the quotes.

Okay so that's the week 1 assignments. Very briefly you'll see up in the class Library I posted some different documents I'll continue to add to this folder throughout the semester.

I'll add any materials that we will want to go back to multiple times.

Throughout the semester the first thing that you should look at and read really carefully is the syllabus.

So that's opening now.

I'll talk through it a little bit and then you can read through on your own. You'll see that there's my contact information again.

Books and supplies at mostly the things that you want to work on finding. Think Again and they say I say, starting tomorrow there will be three copies of each of these books in the library that you can check out for 2 hours from the reserve desk.

So if you don't want to buy them or rent them you can always use the reserve copies in the Library. The Public Libraries also have these texts so you can check out for the semester, you just have to renew them each month.

So that's another option if you don't want to buy them. If you do want to buy them on Amazon at the bookstore I would guess you can get both of them for under $40 so that's up to you.

Okay.

This course as I mentioned is based on that ancient Greek idea of rhetoric using information and reasoning to persuade others and to engage in discussion to refine our own thinking and decisions.

So this course is really focused on the longer argumentative research paper and we are going to be working on this research paper you'll see here you'll complete a 22-25 page argumentative research paper by the end of the semester.

But we're going to be working on it in little chunks and I'm going to be helping you every step of the way.

You are also going to choose your topic so you'll be writing about what's interesting to you.

So it sounds like a lot maybe at this point in the semester but you're going to have no trouble as long as you stay up on the assignments.

This class is asynchronous, and I think you guys are aware of what that means by this point but it means there's no required Zoom meetings or on campus meetings. It's all online and there will be videos and assignments and reading that you can complete on your own schedule at your own pace.

There's four formal papers and that's kind of the main work of the semester. All the informal assignments support these four papers.

We're going to find a problem, we're going to look at the causes of a problem, then we're going to make an argument based on that problem.

And then put that all together into a longer argumentative research paper.

You'll see major due dates for the papers and then the other assignments you'll see on canvas broken down by week.

Please read through the information here on the informal assignments and the formal papers.

And we also have an oral presentation and a writing portfolio.
